about

After moving to Nashville, TN, band leader Preston Cochran wrote about the strange places, people, and things he observed in his new neighborhood. This EP resulted from those observations.

Track Name: 12 Oaks Motel
I never felt more alive than the night I stayed at the 12 Oaks Motel
They’ve got colored cable and HBO in every room
A woman stayed in the room next to mine, she was thinner than a wendy’s napkin
She had a little baby boy

Who would eat receipts, and wet the sheets, and make his mother yell
No dad in sight, some marlboro lights laying on the window sill of the
12 Oaks Motel

I woke up with bed bug bites feeling bluer than a third rate norman bates
I gathered up my empty airplane bottles of Jack
And on my way out through the parking lot, I picked up a pair of panties as a souvenir
They had a hot leopard print

With a bloody stain and a woman’s name written on the little tag
They were Walmart brand, but Chinese made, and finally came to rest at the
12 Oaks Motel

So when shit seems dull, I crack my skull to let the demons out
my mind will rush I’ll get the lust and take a little drive down to the
12 Oaks Motel
Track Name: Cookout
I went down to the cookout
Ran into my friend Blake
His eyes were redder than an applebees, quick frankly he
Looked like he just rolled out of bed

He said, “you know hip-hop is like a bird
That most people can’t really hear
But now its lungs are getting tougher and stronger
You’ve just gotta have the right set of ears”

I just nodded and ordered my combo
I paid my $4.99
I was the late night consumer the founding fathers would want
I got a cheese quesadilla and fries

God bless the people who make our food,
God bless the people who make our food
Midnight, 1am, 2am, 3am, 4am, the patron saints of the people who are hungry, the people who are the damned
God bless the people who make our food,
God bless the people who make our food

So in the end I left satisfied
I was fat, dumb, and happy
I was thinking a lot about Blake and hip hop
Pop music played on the radio
Track Name: Friendzone Gary
Gary works at the Great Escape and he wants to make Lauren his girl
She sorts VHS tapes, stuff like True Romance and Wayne’s World
She’s a New Wave Queen, a hipster's dream with long, dyed hair
He’s a jaded fuck, down on his luck, but this
Girl makes him feel so good

Gary knows that he’s a six, and Lauren on her best days is an eight
But he’s told himself today’s the day, no matter what he’ll ask her on a date
He’s got sweaty palms, pretends he’s calm and goes to her
He asks, how bout the park just before dark, and Lauren, she says, says
why not?

Oh, why not? Why not go to the park with Gary?

Lauren does her makeup, she tells her boyfriend she is going out
Gary just assumed that she was single, well now he’ll figure it all out
In an awkward miss, goes for the kiss, and gets shot, way down
She tells him that she’s can’t, she’s got a man, but she’d love to just be friends. oh Gary; forever friend zoned

Friendzone Gary
Track Name: Temple
Does everyone buy the same shampoo when they run out?
Or do you mix it up and try some brand you’ve never used?

Your purchase makes you an individual
Each second’s special
Coconut cream or berry
My body is a scented temple

Do brown eggs really taste that different from the white?
I personally can’t tell but, maybe my tastebuds just aren’t right

Your purchase makes you an individual
Each second’s special
Organic, local, homegrown
My body is a fragile temple
Track Name: Mama NSA
I’m increasingly convinced I’m being watched by my webcam
It’s got a twinkle in its eye that looks just like Uncle Sam
I know that my phone is constantly checking in with mother
So it can tell her where I’ve been or if I’m getting in trouble

Mama NSA will never leave me
Mama NSA loves to protect me
Mama NSA she always sees me
Even if I can’t see her

If I use bad words, I’ll be put in time out
Don’t talk about weapons, or bombs, and just pretend you’re devout
She’s taught me the sure fire way to be the best little boy
I gotta dedicate my life to work, so I can buy bigger toys

Mama NSA will never leave me
Mama NSA loves to protect me
Mama NSA she always sees me
Even if I can’t see her
Track Name: Them Yuppie Blues
If I wanted to find myself a little girlfriend, I’d swoon one of these christian girls
Who goes to church on Sundays, works nine to five, is gracious and thankful just to be alive
But me I don’t believe in god or fate, no higher power’s telling me to procreate just yet

If I wanted to go out to try and find my soul, I guess I’d buy a plane ticket, fly across globe
Where I’d meet a lot kids who all claim they’re free, fully funded soul searching with someone's money
To me that all still sounds like some consumerist shit, no I don’t wanna hear about your life changing trip again

Them yuppie blues, broadcast on television screens
Them yuppie blues are weighing down on me
Them yuppie blues, oh stop, them yuppie blues
If you ain’t careful, well the yuppie blues are gonna come right down on you

If I wanted to go out try and find some fame, I’d be the loudest voice and call everyone names
Politicians and artists, social activist teams stand by locked and loaded hoping for someone to be mean
But to me they’re all just part of the same dumb coin, each convinced that they’re right, and all you gotta to do is join today

Them yuppie blues, broadcast on television screens
Them yuppie blues are weighing down on me
Them yuppie blues, god damn, them yuppie blues
If you ain’t careful, well the yuppie blues are gonna come down hard on you
